Hi I’m looking at starting a vehicle restoration apprenticeship. I’m 39 and obviously will be taking a £100 a week pay cut. Would I be able to claim any funding or similar?

Hi, I'm 38 years old (soon to be 39) and have a well paid job as a teacher. However, I would like a career change and have considered an apprenticeship with the NHS. The problem is, as an apprentice, I would only earn around £120 a week, which would be nowhere near enough to pay my bills and support my family. Is there any Government funding for people joining the NHS? Thanks.

My son is 18 on his 8th month as an apprentice in construction. Due to covid19 he has worked away for 3 weeks so far ,7 days a week. He has only received the minimum hourly rate of £3.90.?surely he should receive a top up of wages for working away and the expenses he has incurred. Kind regards

Hi, I'm 36 years old and have a pretty decent paid job. However, during this Covid 19 pandemic, I have decided that I want to do something more worthwhile with my life and have considered joining the Ambulance Service. Hi, my son started an apprenticeship in September. He is averaging 20/24 a week because of the weather or machinery breakdown.
My question is, is there an minimum he should get paid? He rightly says he would get more money with a part time job. He was expecting to do a 39 hr week but quite often dies half of that.

I am just wondering something. I'm 20 years old and possibly going to start an apprenticeship. The manager at the interview told me that I will get 3.90 a hour so £117.00 a week. Surely I should get more than that as I'm over 19 and it will be my first year in an apprenticeship (the apprenticeship it is 1 year too) I will turn 21 by the time I finish it.

My son is 17 and is in 6th form but wants to do apprenticeship. Iam, on disability universal credit and get carers allowance for my son who has cystic fibrocis. I thought that if he does an apprenticeship that it counts as in education and i keep the money I get for him but, I've know read thst if he gets paid I lose my benefits for him? I am so worried about losing benefits and very confused about what to believe?

I was working 9-6 with a one hour break in between and spending one day at college every two weeks. I was also earning in between £500-£600 a month.

Hi....I'm 19 an hoping to start an apprenticeship soon as I'm already doing a pre apprenticeship course that will end in mid November....and hoping to get employed soon after that.....my problem is accommodation I hv no relatives in the UK just living with some friends for now and I hv to leave as soon as I start my apprenticeship....but the apprenticeship payment is too small to get me a house....so I'm asking if there is any other way to get a house....can I get a house from the council?.....what are the ways to get myself a house am desperately in need of it

My child has been working in a hair salon for around two months now but has just started hairdressing college, she has been told nothing about it except that she starts college on the 15th October!! She has brought all her own equipment (which she was told to do.) She has now been told by the college that the cost of the course is £150 which the employer pays.. her manager has told her that it’s down to her to pay the cost, she is now really upset and worried that they will kick her off the course! I as her mum am not financially able to help her out and wondered if there was any help out there to support her college as this is her passion.

I have been offered an apprenticeship position starting in January, it will be for 38 hours per week earning £16.300. I am a single Mum and am 33 and have a 2 year old son who turns 3 in January. I am planning to claim the 30 free child care hours. Do you know if I will be able to claim child tax credits, working tax credits, housing benefit and council tax reduction without any issues? I am claiming income support, child tax credits, housing benefit and housing benefit reduction at the moment with no issue.

In september i started working as an apprentice in a school as a teaching assistant. so far i haven't had any holiday pay with the 7 weeks i have had to take of as the school was closed.
as apprentices are by law entitled to holiday pay, where do i stand? if i dont get any pay for the summer holiday i am going to have no money when i get back to school in september.

Hi I'm 43 this year but was thinking about doing an apprenticeship. I'm on child tax credit. Child benefit and job seekers. What would I get if I did this and what would I loose? If I could get working tax credits then I would loose free school meals. Would my housing benefit increase? Due to the benefit cap I'm struggling here. I would have qualified for tax credits but will be forced to make a new claim on the new system ??

Hi I’m just wondering if coming up to end of my first year and I’m over nineteen but have been off sick due to an accident for 4 months does my employer still have to give me my raise as I’m over 19 or can he wait till I’ve worked the extra 4 months I was off for ? Thanks

Hi my 16 yr old as start a apprenticeship but started the ball rolling late with collage so as it does my money stopped and got told off tax creds as I work 16 hours and that’s what I was getting they can’t do anything till he starts collage which is now going to b in January....all am getting is my wage from work which isn’t very much as I only work 16 hours ....is there any help out there it’s Christmas next month and been like this now for 5 week

Hi I'm looking for help my son has been doing plastering in college did level1 then started apprenticeship as level 2.....his friend took my on and been with him 8mths but all of a sudden things stared going wrong his friend was taking days off making excuse with van etc but my son wasnt getting paid off him not even when he went to college once a week then he told my son he couldn't afford to keep him and turns out he didn't ha e insurance on him at all ....now I'm stuck in finding anywhere for him to finish his apprenticeship as he,ll been finished in June ...there no money coming in and he,s thinking of going back to college full time but I don't know if he can claim anything.....does anyone know???

i am about to start an apprenticeship with in a school. Me and my husband do not get any benefits other than child benefit because my husband earns about £3 over what we can to claim. I was just wondering If there is any known funding i can apply for to help with childcare costs or fuel/ travel cost. as i live quite far from the school i will be working at so my weekly wage will only just cover these costs.

I've been doing an apprentiship at a school as a L2 TA. Myself and the other apprentices have completed the course in a year (two year course) because work and college pushed us to saying we'd be able to be fully qualified and employed. However now works keeping us on as apprentices and refusing to pay us the correct amount for the next year. We're not receiving any other training and are all fully qualified. Is this allowed?

My Son lives with me at home and has just started an apprenticeship where he is paid £570 a month so £135 a week, my child tax & child benefit has stopped which I expected but does anyone know if and if so how much (estimate) my housing benefit would be deducted or even stopped. He’s offered to pay but £540 a month is hardly a high wage so I dont think i’ll be taking money from him. Just need to add this to my quarterly budget.

My daughter took an apprenticeship at a hairdressers with in house training for City and Guilds Level two. After 9 months of me asking for confirmation of theory training and my daughter being used as cheap labour she found another apprenticeship through a college. She has now found out that a year of her city and guilds funding has been lost as the previous salon has taken it and not given her any theory training. Therefore she is having to complete a two year course in one year! I am so cross but do not know who to complain to. She has very mild learning difficulties and needs to also achieve a level 1 functional maths as well as her hairdressing NVQ, luckily she managed to pass her English GCSE. There may not be any way that I can get back the year training that she has lost but I would hate to think of anyone else being treated in this way.

Once a child begins an apprenticeship, the parent’s are treated as having a non-dependant adult living in their household and child benefit will end. Once child benefit ends, this is will affect any other benefit that the family may be in receipt of such as housing and/or council tax benefit. You would have to speak directly to DWP to see how this may affect you.

My son will be 22 shortly he's had various jobs since leaving school, all have been minimum wage and he's been treated badly by quite a few companies. He's applied for an apprenticeship and been accepted,as he wants to get qualifications, we are not sure what the wages are but if it's 3.50 he will struggle, as the wage will only be 137.00 he still lives with me and his Dad but we aren't rolling in money and he as to pay his way. He's got a car and needs that to get to work would he be entitled to any benefits, just to get him through the first year.

Your daughter may wish to speak to the National Careers Service directly, and/or JobCentre Plus. Much will depend upon how much she is earning via the apprenticeship. She may be able to get some help, but there would be a difference regarding what she may be entitled to between a training apprenticeship and a job-based one.

I'm afraid he is not entitled to reimbursement for travel. Factoring transport costs in ahead of taking the job is always a good idea when taking on an apprenticeship, purely because of the low wages. Once your brother is in his second year and he has been on his apprenticeship for a year, because he is 19 he will be allowed to claim the minimum wage for his age from his employer

My 19 yr old grandson is an apprentice. He has just passed his driving test and has a little car. His car insurance allows limited mileage and he has a black box in it to record his driving. His firm now tells him he has to travel 30 miles daily to a different site. Not only can he not afford it on his apprentice wage but his mileage will exceed on his insurance for the car and his car is only a cheap rinabout. Can they make him do this journey in his own vehicle with no petrol help?

These are the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates for your age, I'm not sure what 'top ups' mean, you may wish to ask your employer directly.

Hi, my son is 17 and started an electrical apprenticeship in Feb for a really great company. He's enjoying it and they are very fair with him. He is earning £3.75 per hour and I was wondering if there are grants available for tools, as he's just spent £150 buying new tools he needs and there are still a lot more he has to get?

Basically I was wondering, I know that after my first year my wage should increase to standard minimum wage but I started mid way through a month, so would I get half and half pay for that month or just be paid an apprentice wage? My son Is suppose to be doing an apprenticeship with a building company to become a joiner . He is being paid £3.40 an hour , which his fine however there is no trading program in place and they won't put him through college until he had been there a year . Can they do this , as. He is just being used as a labourer . Should he be being paid more . He has just had an injury at work and had to take two weeks off work , they hardly paid him for his time off . I could really do with some advice as I don't know where he stands . His only just turned 18 and they have had him working over 40 hours and starting before 7 am . Please help ! Thanks

My daughter is 16 and has jsut left school and begun an apprenticeship at a hairdressers. The company who are going to do the apprenticeship won't start training her until September and so I think that she is entitled to the national minimum wage for a 16 year old which is £4.05 an hour. The hairdressers boss is only paying her the apprenticeship rate of £3.50 and says that he is entitled to do this because she is an apprentice. I have looked for the evidence of this but cannot find anything. Is he right and if he is where can i find evidence that he is right? I've looked on the government websites about wages and apprentices but this is not mentioned anywhere.

It is unlikely you would be eligible to receive your apprenticeship wage and a bursary in addition. You would have to check directly with the college.

I live in Sevenoaks so I contacted my aunt so I can join them and stay in one of the studio rooms they. She accepted. However,since she's at university with her daughter. I began working as an apprentice on 25th April 2016 and I am 22 years old.
I am completing a level 2 in childcare which is typically a 12 month course. I was not registered to start my course until September / October time, this was due the company choosing to change learning providers over the summer.
I had orginally thought that once I had worked for a year as an apprentice irrespective of when the company chose to sign me up to my NVQ, I would be entitled to age related minimum wage.
I have been told however that as a level 2 is a 12 month course (I am due to complete this course early within 8 months), my pay will not go up till I complete my level 2 and sign up to my level 3, which is where age related pay will come into play.

Sorry this so long but I am desperate to understand what is going on with my pay.

Employees on a low income (including apprentices) may be eligible for housing benefit, although someone under the age of 35 may only be able to claim for a bedsit or a room in shared house

My partner and I are currently in receipt of a joint ESA claim. And I receive child tax credit and child benefit for our young daughter.
Feeling much better and more fit for work my partner is considering future employment. My question is -if my partner should take an apprenticeship, earning roughly £100 a week, would we still be entitled to housing benefit or something towards housing benefit? I ask as with our rent being £550 if and when my partner decides to take the apprenticeship all we will have coming in is my child tax credit and benefit which is for my daughter, and the low apprentice rate which barely covers the cost of rent. My daughter works a 40 hr wk apprenticship in a nursery earning 3.60 ph. Can she get any help with costs towards prescriptions, dental and eye care?

I'm on an apprenticeship which started in January, I work 39 hours a week but am only on £3.40 an hour and will be for 18 months. Does this qualify me for the low income support or are there any other benefits such as help with prescriptions or dentist costs?

I've been doing work experience in cafe for over a year now, there is another girl who has been doing apprenticeship she's due to finish end of may. This girl does 40hours a week hasn't been paid holiday pay in the 2years also she doesn't get paid for bank holidays. The employer says she's not entitled to them. She's 28. Is there any help out their for her.

If you’re single and under 35, you can only get Housing Benefit for bedsit accommodation or a single room in shared accommodation. There is a bit of a grey area when it comes to apprentices receiving top-ups in income as it is also based upon other circumstances. However, I'm afraid low income goes with the apprentice territory and unless you have dependents, or are living away from home, there is little help out there apart from some benefits derived from having an NUS student card which can be obtained via whichI hope this helps.

I'm afraid low wages go with the apprenticeship territory and before you take the job it is important to figure out whether as a low-paid employee, you can afford to. Unfortunately, there is little you can do in terms of finding long term funding for transport/commuting. According to gov.uk, 'Jobcentre Plus provides assistance for the unemployed, towards travel costs to interviews and for the first three months of their apprenticeships. In some local authority areas you may be entitled to a travel discount, such as the apprentice Oyster photocard in London. There are also schemes available in the West Midlands, Manchester and Liverpool. Check to see if there are similar schemes available in your local area. Apprentices are also entitled to an NUS card through the National Union of Students. Your training provider can also access funding to support you with work expenses if your circumstances are difficult. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately, if you are an apprentice through an employer and you are earning a wage, this is not considered to be government approved training in which your mother would still receive child benefit. Once child benefit stops, then your mum Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credit and Housing Benefit will all be affected.

He went to our local college last year and did year one plumbing, Hes applied for year two but hes been told he has to pay £1000 for the course. In the first instance I would read his contract to see what it specifies with regards to overtime.. You may wish to give ACAS a call regarding this as overtime should be paid at at the national minimum wage for his age group. However, there is nothing to say that overtime hours have to be paid. What ACAS may question is when they take into account his pay and the hours that he works, his hourly rate must not fall below national minimum wage for his apprenticeship. I find it annoying that apprentices are paid lower than minimum wage. My son earns £120 Max a week for over 40 hrs in a small hot kitchen. He has to pay for his own chef clothes etc and pay me keep as i lost all my tax credits and child benefit when he left college. Surely if its law now that they do something like this til 18 then child benefit should still be paid if they only earn minimum wage.

As specified in the article, like anyone who is on a low income, apprentices may be eligible to get benefits from the government. These are in place to help people who do not earn much and it is worth finding out what you may be entitled to. There are a variety of different benefits available such as housing, council tax or low income allowances. Additionally if apprentices have children they can probably claim child tax benefits and may be able to get help with childcare costs. Your sister and/or partner would have to contact your local jobcentre to find out more.

Much depends upon how you are renting; whether it is private or the council. You may be entitled to Housing Benefit dependent upon your circumstances, age and whether you have savings or not. All apprentices obviously have to pay for their own transport to work on a daily basis, regardless of how they travel whether bus, train etc. However if you are travelling longer distances than you would ordinarily because of a job that may be out of the area, then your employer should factor some expenses. I would see what it states in your contract and what you have agreed to. But in the first instance I would discuss this with your boss directly, especially in situations where it is putting you out of pocket as a result.

I am on an Apprentiship as a Plumbing and Gas Engineer.
I own a car and my employer has said that I must use my own means of transport to get to work everyday.
However as my place of work varies this means I am being asked to arrive at the office, at the Plumbers house and also at Customers houses to start work yet I'm not being paid any mileage.
Am I obliged to do this at my cost when I'm earning £3:30 an hour?
I also question whether my Car Insurance is valid for this travel?

My brother is on an apprenticeship and gets approx £120 per week as my mother is on a state pension he has to contribute about £20 per week and is paying out £70per month for travel expenses is there anyway he can get some support with travel costs as my brother and i cant help contribute towards them and its having an impact in my mum and brother as its all a bit of a struggle financially

It depends on what sort of apprenticeship he is serving and what he has agreed to in his contract i.e whether his hours are set, or flexible. If he is contracted for set hours and his employer is not paying him the set wage, then he may be able to claim it back. If this is the case, I suggest your son gives ACAS a call.

Daughter is 4 already goes 9-3 free everyday but wondered if she had too go for longer would the extra hours be funded? And also would we be able too claim full housing benefit \council tax benefit?

Please see minimum wage guidelines for apprentices whichIt will tell you that minimum wage applies when aged 19 or over only to those who are still in their first year of the apprenticeship.

my son is coming to the end of his Level 2 Business administration apprenticeship with a training company. His had to change placements at 8mths due to his first employer going out of business and the training company providing his NVQ took him on. He is now at the end and in discussion with the training provider to stay with them and complete his level 3 working in their offices and the administrator. However they are trying to keep him on apprenticeship wages for the first three months of his Level 3 although he has completed a year and is 19. Is the legal or is he entitled by law to minimum wage, which is what he is asking for?

It depends what it says in his contract and what sort of apprenticeship contact it is. I would read the contract and if you are still in doubt, give ACAS a call. If the company is working outside of employement guidelines, then your son may be able to claim back pay.

My son is doing an apprenticeship, which has varying hours every week, sometimes as little as 9 hours a week. He has only been getting paid for the hours he is doing ( it can be outside so not always able to work and the Manager has cancelled whole days). I notice that you state 'The minimum apprentices can earn is £80 per week' so should my son be getting paid that amount, even if he has not been working enough hours, through no choice of his own.

Hi, I'm 20 years old and in my second year of my apprenticeship and I earn £190 a week and am looking for somewhere affordable to live but with this wage I don't think I can afford anywhere without any help, I could afford somewhere to live on that wage but if I come to any troubles I will not be able to cope, am I elidble for housing benefit or anything along those lines

Hi all looking for some advice. It looks as though my partner will be loosing his job and he's decided that instead of just jumping into another job he'd prefer to train and do an apprenticeship. We have a child and I only work part time. If he takes on an apprenticeship then he will take a wage decrease with it will we get any help towards our living etc expenses?

Hello,Im 18 and I started my apprenticeship September 2015 and was taken on even though I told them I was pregnant with my 2nd Child. My baby is due late February and I start my maternity leave after Christmas Holidays. As I haven't worked at the company for long enough I wont receive SMP but have found out I can apply for MA. My partner and I currently have a joint income of 37K but pay childcare for my daughter who is 2.5 years, We get some Child Tax Credits and a very small contribution of childcare costs. I don't think I will realistically be able to work when I come back from maternity leave as I will have 2 children in nursery for 5 days a week (£425)!!! we would be losing money putting them into childcare and going to work.

Is there any help I can get?

I am looking for advice. My son started college when he left school. He was offered an apprentiship in his second year of college, which he completed. They then offered him another apprentiship. Level 3 advanced apprentiship. The advice I'm looking for is. He turned 19 and my understanding is, if he is in he second year of an apprenticeship and is 19 he is now entitled to a pay rise of minimum wage for his age. The college say no as he started a new apprentiship and it won't go up till next year. How have they swung this? I feel really unfair on him as he doing the same thing in the same department.

I started my apprenticeship 3 months ago and am already working at the standard of a previous apprentice who has been there for 3 years and almost at the level of the graduates who are getting paid twice what I am. When do you think would be a reasonable time to discuss a pay rise? What percentage increase can I expect as reasonable?

Also, I don't live in London but work there. It costs me £5000 a year on the train to get to work and college. Am I entitled to any funding to help pay for this as it is a large proportion of my wages. Thanks.

However, you may wish to confirm this with HMRC to verify the logistics of working with a sole-trader and how he will be registered for NI payments after the age of 25.

Hi - 24 year old could only get on an apprenticeship by being taken on by family sole-trader. He will be paid £95 per week. I understand no tax is payable, but whay about ni? can he pay ni direct to keep up to date??? sole-trader does not opearate paye.

The working hours directive covers how many hours an employee should have to work per week. The amount is set at an average of 48 hours. This means that you may have to work more than this one week, but it should be balanced out by working less in another. Your average is worked out over a 17 week period and you cannot be forced to work beyond this limit unless you choose to opt out. However, as your other son is under the age of 18 then there are slightly different rules. As a young worker, hours cannot be longer than 40 hours per week rather than the normal 48. Also, the employer must give him at least 12 hours off between shifts and at least 24 hours clear from working each week. I suggest in this instance you give ACAS a call in order to ensure their company is not working outside employment guidelines.

Hi there, i started an apprenticeship just under a year ago. I have worked 35-50 hours a week for a considerable amount of time i am the most skilled appreciate within the building trade i have met. I am left alone to plumb up a bathroom 1st and second fix and have it checked over after i have finished. I can plaster a room flawlessly, when my boss isnt onsite im charge and im only on £25 per day. I have some months where im payed just £200 but worked 10-12 hours 7 days a week i have had a week off due to ilness since ive started. Im just looking for some advice on what im entitled to benefit wise to keep me going and what i should do with regards to my situation. Ian

Hi my 19 yer old daughter earns £106 per week on an apprenticeship. Whilst the idea of these sound good she unfortunately was ill did not qualify for sick pay as wages too low, does not get council tax benefit only gets help with prescriptions or dental if treatment is over £80 and for me not eligible for working tax credit. Financially it's a struggle wish she'd just stayed doing shop work she would have been able to support herself more. I used to encourage young people to do these I will encourage them to get qualifications more from open learning now. You can't even fast track on these as my daughter has been told to slow down on course work as has to do the full year. She had to sell her car as wasn't able to run it! Not good for those going apprenticeship will give more independence and depending on employer skills are debatable

@con - You can undertake as many apprenticeships as you wish, as long as they are consecutive. Therefore your wages/funding would not be affected.

I'm afraid not, and it depends whether your nephew's course is considered as government 'approved training'. If not ( and apprenticeships are generally not) then parents are treated as having a non-dependant adult living at home, which will affect benefits, regardless of how much your nephew is spending on travel. Unfortunately, as soon as the parent loses their Child Benefit entitlement, they will also lose Child Tax Credits, affect Working Tax Credit Housing and Council Tax Benefit.

I'm afraid not. There is help available through schemes such as railcards etc, however there is no expenses available towards petrol. Was he not aware of his travel situation before he undertook the apprenticeship? As this is something he would have had to make sure he factored in. It is a lot of outlay per month, especially on an apprentice's wages.

my daughter is doing level3 apprenticeship in hairdressing. She was working at a salon from July last year to may this year when the college was on holiday they told her she had to use holiday as they couldn't pay her is this correct as she has been told they should have her in work or if she's not needed still pay her for this day.she was never paid the minimum wage she had different amount every week for eg £95 one week £78 another £67, £101 is she owed monies as we understand it is £105.00 for level 3 and the other thing her new employer has told her he can't pay her for her holiday in August as her last employer should have paid this she was never given a contract would be grateful of any advice as to if she is owed anything or not.

@sam - Even though you are on an apprenticeship scheme you are treated as an employee and therefore will be paid a regular wage. This money will be paid weekly or monthly to you and you have to pay tax and national insurance on your earnings. However, if you are earning an apprenticeship minimum wage, this puts you below the tax threshold personal allowance of £10,600, therefore you won't have to pay tax. I hope you maybe able to offer some advice. My daughter has just completed her level 2 and level 3,hairdressing aporenticeship she was 18 last august, but has only just completed her full apprentcship.

She is currently paid £2.73 even though she is fully qualified at what point should she be paid at the minimum wage when she turned 18 or when she qualified. Her employer has given her a fixed term contract until September, and my feeling is they will not pay her minimum wage until then.

Are you able to confirm the legal position snd what she is actually entitled to.

i got an apprenticeship through the job center about 11 weeks ago. Ive been on £50 per week JSA for 11 weeks now whilst working full time and i have just been signed onto the apprenticeship today. i need my P45 back from the job center but in order to do that i need to sign off JSA but my employer does not pay his employees untill the end of every month. this means i will be working for a month without any money. am i entitled to anything from the job center or my employee?

@pheeb - I have included the national minimum wages for apprentices via whichYou don't say how old you are, but the current £2.73 rate per hour is for apprentices aged 16 to 18. If you are in this age bracket, then you are getting paid more than the national minimum wage for apprentices in your age group. If you are 19 and over and have completed your first year, then you should be paid in the aged 18-20 wage group. I hope this helps.

I have been in employment for 9 months now, as an apprentice, well 7 months because the first 2 months I was in an apprenticeship wage when it hadn't even started, so it started properly in september, the instructor came in up to November and I haven't seen him since, and I'm still on £3.50 an hour, so I'm basically cheap labour cause I am 18 now aswel, help?

@joss - You do not have to pay for NHS dental treatment if, when the treatment starts, if you are: aged under 18, or under 19 and receiving full-time education. The NHS Low Income Scheme also provides financial help to people not generally exempt from charges, but who may be entitled to full or partial help if they are in receipt of a low income and don't have savings over the capital limit. Hi, I have recently began an apprenticeship as an estate agent and it it with a company based in Newcastle. I live 25+ miles from my work place and am spending around £50 a week alone on getting there and back. Is there any expenses/travel funding I can apply for? Any feedback would be really appreciated. @kkawme - You could apeak to a Job Centre Plus Benefits Advisor to see if you are entitled to housing benefit and any other benefits. You could also use the benefits calculator via Turn to Us, whichI hope this helps.

@Mashu - as specified in the article, like anyone who is on a low income, apprentices may be eligible to get benefits from the government. These are in place to help people who do not earn much and it is worth finding out what you may be entitled to whichI hope this helps.

@sullers - have you asked for a re-assesment from the CMS/CSA, as you shouldn't be paying half of your income in child support. If your situation has changed then they may be willing to review it. I have included the leaflet on how child maintenance is worked out here. If you think it may be too excessive or wrong, you can appeal. I hope this helps.

I'm a 29 year old apprentice who funded the course myself, I have to take one day a week unpaid whilst at collage. So I get paid £320 before tax, which may seem like lots compared to some youngsters out there, the only problem is my rent is £630 a month (private rent) I also pay child maintenance which is £160 plus running a van buying tools, paying bills, and food etc.. Leaves me minus every month with literally zero disposable income in fact it's actually minus buy quite a lot.

I work hard pay my taxes and have never claimed a penny in my life, is there any way I can get some sort of financial help to get me through the next 18 months? Otherwise I will end up bankrupt!
Please tell me there's help for a hard working honest Englishmen in my own country pleaseeee?

I have an apprenticeship in a hospital and both the permentant members of staff in the office which i work are leaving this leaves three apprentices in the office on there own. two of us have only been here a month, i was wondering as we will not be trained and they will not have anyone to train us whether we have any entitlement to extra wages or anything?

@angi12350 - yes, the downside to apprenticeships for families is that they lose child benefit and child tax credits when a young person takes up an apprenticeship. Therefore, it can understandably be quite difficult, and must seem a bit like swings and roundabouts whether he stays on at school and you can still recieve child benefit etc, or he goes out into the world becomes non-dependent by earning his own money and trains for a profession. The only help I can point you to is that last year Jobcentre Plus bought out a Travel Discount Card that provides a 50% discount on most National Rail journeys. The card is for eligible individuals in the first three months of their apprenticeship. You can apply through your local Jobcentre. In addition, apprentices are also entitled to an NUS Card through the National Union of Students, which for £11 offers access to discounts from more than 120 high street and online retail partners. Savings of over £525 can be made on travel, books, DVDs, mobile and broadband, clothes etc. It includes 11% on a 16-25 Railcard. Unfortunately, the help doesn't stretch to family-based benefits.

As the government are wanting more young people to start apprentceships more help should be given as the wage is low. My son has started an apprenticeship and earns £95 a week. I no longer get £20child benefit or £50child tax credit. His bus fares are £20 a week as he no longer gets half fares. And no free prescriptions. He is only 16. Is any help available as we are struggling to manage

My son has been offered an apprenticeship with a company in London lasting 4 years. The wages would be £13k per year. I would love to be in a position were I could subsidise his wages but I'm not. Would he get any housing benefits as obviously £13k won't go that far in London.

My 18 year old son has started an apprenticeship in London, however as we live on the borders and just come under Hertfordshire he is not entitled to the apprentice oyster card. It is costing my son over £60 per week in travel costs.Is there a travel card to give apprentices a discount on public transport like there is for students?

My son is in his third year of a carpenter apprenticeship, his boss has told him he has to travel to another site over 80 miles away.
He cannot afford to.
What can he do.

@GillyC - As he is not in full-time education, but comes under the umbrella of approved training, he may be able to get help under the NHS Low Income Scheme which provides financial help to people not exempt from charges, but who may be entitled to full or partial help with healthcare costs. Anyone can apply as long as they don’t have savings or investments over the capital limit ( £16,000). The amount of help is based on a comparison between weekly income and assessed requirements at the time the claim is made. Entitlement broadly follows Income Support rules to decide how much, if anything, he would have to pay towards healthcare costs, including dental treatment. The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) website has more information about the NHS Low Income Scheme, including how to apply.

my son is 16 and a 1st year apprentice. Should be still be receiving free eye tests and dental care. I assumed he would be classed as being in further education because he was under 18.

My 17 year old son has recently started an apprentiship but like many others he needs information about rent assistance. He'll be 18 in March-does this affect his situation? Is he entitled to some form of Housing Benefit? Am I right in thinking the local Job Centre wil have the answers? My son has just started his apprenticeship and will be receiving wages, he also has to travel quite a distance and pay about £10 a day travel costs. I have seen from previous comments on this web site that most people are querying benefits to help with travel or living costs. This makes me feel that as yet there are no obvious ways for apprentices to be able to claim for any extra help that they so obviously need. 16 year olds have to be in education of sorts until 18yrs. If my son was in college then I assume he would get travel costs ? The apprentices work a full day, 5 days a week, they are on minimum wage and I think they should be entitled to claim at least a certain percentage towards travel costs. Your web site does not make it very clear as to what steps to take to claim or if indeed there is travel benefits at all. I seem to feel that you are saying that it is up to the discression of the employer, is this correct ? Also, no one seems to have had a reply to their query, so, what is the point of this comments box ? Thank you.

My colleague who deals with helping students financially has told me that unfortunately apprentices are a group that can not be helped with funding. However a college should be able to help apprentices investigate to see if any local charities can help.

Hi i am 17 and have a apprenticeship at an arts centre in west midlands. I get paid on 1st of month but this month i didnt get paid until 11th, i have a direct debit to come out on 9th of the month and it couldnt be paid so now i have double to pay this month plus charges. Do i have any rights as an apprentice and are the company liable for this.

Heya, have just been reading all these comments and seems everyone is suffering the same predicament, was about to leave a similar comment myself, as my brother is starting an apprenticeship and it will be costing him £25 a week, or £90 a month to get to his work and it is so much money out of his earnings! These questions from everyone are all basically the same, people need help, or there should surely be some grant provided to such people taking on apprenticeships, but doesn't seem there is. Or despite leaving many comments and questions, i can't find any answers, where are the answers?

I got into the trade training academy in palmersville and they have set me up with an employer in Newcastle. I will be earning a minimum of £100 a week and it will cost me at least £25 a week just to get up to work and the training accedmy and also i have to pay £20 a week board for my parents i was just wondering if I could get any help towards travel costs to make it easier for me. i am nearly 21 and am in my second year of my mechanical engineering apprenticeship. I earn about £150 a week, i do live at home and pay £50 a week for this, also £25 a week maintenance for my son weekly. i have to pay all my travel about £30 a week. i have to start buying tools to help further mein my apprnticeship and wondered if there is any funding available for this? would be most grateful for any help or support.

Hi.. I have been in an apprenticeship for 7 months now, and i am just wondering whether i was eligible for any funding to help me get to and from work. I receive £78 a week and get paid at the end of every month. It costs me almost £70 a month and i struggle with that. Are you able to help me with this? Thanks!

Hi, My 23 year old son is due to start an apprenticeship with a brewery, he is living with us and will have to somehow travel about 15 miles each day to work, 15 back. His income will be about £100 / week for which he will be expected to work full time Monday to Friday and Saturday morning!Is this reasonable, and can he claim any help with transport costs that would take up a large portion of his income?

I am a 21 year old apprentice, I earn £160 pw (which is more than most but I have now been working there over 6 months now hence and have had a payrise), however I currently do not live at home, I live in a flat with my partner who has recently had no work (he is self employed labourer). We have been looking into what other help we can receive however after trying to apply for some help we were told that we were not entitled to anything at all as my wages are enough to support us both. I am currently paying out over £750 pm not including food, or fuel costs, I have a car to run as well to get to and from work, without the car I would lose my job as I have a small diesel car which works out cheaper a week than the 2-3 buses I would have to catch to get to work everyday.
It is getting to a point where I cannot financially uphold us both for any longer, I cannot live paying for both myself and my partner and still get to work it is getting to a point now where I can barely afford to feed myself or fuel the car. I cannot ask for another pay rise as I had one 2 months ago, also as we are a small company my boss cannot afford to increase my wage any more than he already has. I love my job and do not want to leave but it is getting to a point where I was financially better off out of work than I am now working. I chose an apprenticeship as I could not get any other job without relevant experience and all my experience is in cold calling which is a soul destroying job, I would rather be homeless than go back to that hence why I went for an apprenticeship. Is there any other help I can get? I am not old enough for tax credits, I don't have any children and I work almost 40 hrs per week!! What can I do? Is there anything else like a grant or support I can apply for?

hi i was offered a job recently but its only one day a week, i agreed to starting and went for my first day recently, i really enjoyed it so am going to be doing the job, although don't find that the one day is doing much to my learning i was asked about going as an apprentice but the people don't know much about this and must add niether do i, could you give me any advice on this and what it would entail, the new employer doesn't have much funding but can give me one day pay then asked if i could go voluntary for more hours until funding available e.g when proceeds sell better is there anything i can do to get any help .

Hi, I am just about to finish my business and admin apprenticeship, and the company I am with think I will be staying on. How do I determine what wage to ask for? I am 19 years old and I am being paid £4.83ph. Do I look at what other people are being paid in the company? Or my experience? This is my first job after leaving college. I have been working at the company for over a year. By the time I finish it will have been around 18 months. I am not desperate to stay on as I feel I can't progress much further and it feels as if they are bit stingy with what they pay other employees. The manager relies on me a lot but half the time I feel like cheap labour.
